Gnatwrens - Gnatcatchers - Wrens

Manuel Antonio National Park provides a rich habitat for a variety of small, insectivorous songbirds, including Gnatwrens (Polioptilidae), Gnatcatchers (Polioptilidae), and Wrens (Troglodytidae). These birds are integral to the park's ecosystem, particularly in controlling insect populations. Gnatwrens and Gnatcatchers, with their delicate frames and energetic foraging behavior, are typically found in the park’s dense undergrowth and forest edges, where they search for small arthropods. Their high-pitched calls are often heard before they are seen flitting among the foliage. Wrens, known for their characteristic loud songs despite their small size, are common throughout the park’s diverse habitats, from the forest floor to the higher vegetation. These species help maintain the ecological balance of Manuel Antonio, contributing to both the diversity and health of its tropical ecosystems.
