Greebes - Ducks

Manuel Antonio National Park is home to a variety of waterfowl, including Grebes (Podicipedidae) and Ducks (Anatidae), which are often found in the park’s freshwater lakes, ponds, and coastal wetlands. Grebes, such as the Pied-billed Grebe, are exceptional swimmers and divers, using their sharp bills to hunt for small fish, amphibians, and aquatic invertebrates. These birds are often seen gliding gracefully across the water’s surface or diving beneath it to capture prey. Ducks, including species like the Mottled Duck, are commonly found in the park’s wetland areas, where they forage for seeds, aquatic plants, and small invertebrates. Their presence in Manuel Antonio National Park is essential for maintaining the health of wetland ecosystems, as they contribute to seed dispersal, pest control, and the overall balance of aquatic habitats. Together, Grebes and Ducks enhance the park’s rich biodiversity and play vital roles in its ecological functioning.
