Typical - Antbirds - Antpitas

Manuel Antonio National Park is home to a diverse range of birds, including Typical Antbirds (Thamnophilidae), Antbirds (Formicariidae), and Antpittas (Grallariidae), which are crucial components of the park’s intricate ecosystems. These species are primarily insectivorous and play a vital role in controlling insect populations, particularly ants, which are abundant in the park. Typical Antbirds are often found in the dense undergrowth, where they use their sharp bills to catch insects and small invertebrates. Antpittas, with their secretive nature and distinctive calls, are typically seen in the forest’s lower levels, where they forage for insects and small prey. Both groups of birds help maintain the balance of the park’s ecosystems by controlling pests and contributing to the biodiversity that makes Manuel Antonio a rich natural sanctuary.
